Get to Know the garden

here are the basics - which may be of interest

Brian & Faith have lived here for over 30 years, and started with a very blank canvas.

Vegetable growing to feed a growing family economically was the starting point, but flowers and shrubs gradually increased and took over - and the children left!

We are North facing, over 500 ft high, on grade 3 soil, with over 50 inches of rain a year. We get plenty of wind, sometimes salty, as the sea is not far away. But we get relatively few frosts,

With a 270 degree rural panorama, stunning views of Lundy and fabulous sunsets from the terrace, there is no better place to be!

The garden has gradually evolved with no master plan. An idea occurs, and whoosh - there it is. But it is all bound together with a seemingly endless trail of artwork, wit, humour, puzzles, and the odd water feature. We are disappointed if you leave without a smile - and children love it!

It is important not to get too distracted by the frivolity, as there are some unusual plants and shrubs to admire, totally unique planting ideas, as well as wild areas. But the lawn does not get much attention.

Brian is now retired, and the main gardener, but don't expect him to know the names of many of the plants. They get planted in a cottage garden type style, and it is the survival of the fittest - they have to battle their neighbour, slugs, and loads of rain on poor soil. There are casualties, but 700 bedding plants fill gaps., although slugs and weather probably have half of those!

We have been opening the garden for over 20 years to support various charities, and have ample parking. Cream teas or cakes are usually available as well. Visitors get a personal welcome, and a garden leaflet to help guide around. The normal "take care uneven ground" rules apply, plus the "Beware of the Owner" warning.
